Últim estiu a Ordino, by Joan Peruga, is considered a classic of Andorran and the Pyrenees, published in different editions in Catalan and has been translated into Spanish and French.

The novel recreates the life of the Assumpta (Sumpta) of Areny-Plandolit, one of the daughters of Don Guillem, the general syndic and one of the most important characters in the history of the country. Sumpta’s correspondence with her brother Quimet serves the author to mould the character with exquisite sensitivity. The protagonist’s eyes show us the transformations that affected Andorra (and the whole of the Pyrenees) at the end of the 19th century, due to the crisis of the economy and traditional ways of life. Also in Catalonia, and especially in Barcelona, where the family spent long periods and experienced to the full the highlights and lowlights of industrialisation, the Catalan Febre d’Or and Renaixença.

With the help of Sumpta, we suggest a tour to admire the areas of the valley and the town of Ordino that serve as the setting for the novel: the gully open to the views of the estate of Any de la Part, the path from Riberamunt towards the Serrat, the labyrinth of the old village, the large manor houses of Els Rossell and Areny-Plandolit, the Segudet trail, which weaves it way through the forests of Casamanya, the church of Sant Corneli and Sant Cebrià, with the small porch that presides over the square…

The eight points of the route are marked with a small plaque, where you will find a QR code that links to the website of the Ordino town hall. You will find information on historical and cultural aspects of the different places—accompanied by artwork―and an excerpt from the novel that alludes to it.

Note: you can find the book in Catalan and Spanish at the Ordino Tourism Office
