The recorder was extremely popular in Europe, especially in England, during the 17th century and early 18th century. It was used to accompany folk songs and dances, and also played at royal courts. Between 1650 and 1660, during the republican period of the English Commonwealth, music suffered a major decline both at Court and in the Church, and the recorder was condemned by the Puritans as “an instrument of the devil.”
